Lori Bergen, dean of the College of Media, Communication and Information at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Monica Davey, Chicago bureau chief of The New York Times, have been named members of The Poynter Institute’s Board of Trustees.
The two will replace Andy Barnes, retired editor and chairman of the Tampa Bay Times, and Anne Hull, Pulitzer Prize winner and former national reporter for The Washington Post, both of whom are concluding their terms. Bergen and Davey will begin their work as trustees in 2018 after serving the Institute as members of the National Advisory Board.
“Poynter is an institution which serves both the journalism industry and the academy,” said Poynter president Neil Brown. “Lori brings insight into modern journalism curriculum at the university level, and Monica understands the nuances of leadership at one of America’s most respected news organizations. This powerful combination will help Poynter advance our status as the premier resource for current and future journalists.”
Bergen came to The University of Colorado from Marquette University, where she served as dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication. As founding dean of CU Boulder’s first new college in more than 50 years, Bergen is leading the charge to bring an interdisciplinary approach to media, communication and information education that is enriched by data and immersive technologies. She is the immediate past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and earned her doctorate from Indiana University.

Davey serves as the Chicago bureau chief for The New York Times, covering the Midwest. Before joining the Times, Davey was a working journalist at the Roanoke Times and the Tampa Bay Times. Davey earned her degree in linguistics from Brown University.
