Mary Mitchell explains how and why the newsroom hired college students to do a content audit of every newspaper edition from April 1-May 31, 2021. Mitchell is the director of culture and community engagement and an editorial board member of the Chicago Sun-Times.

WGN-TV: STARTING SIMPLE CONTENT AUDIT WITH STAFF

Dana Ballard, producer at WGN-TV, shares how she asked a few reporters and producers to start tracking information about their sources as a way to get others involved in the process. She talks about pushback and questions from the staff.

ASSOCIATED PRESS: HOW INCLUSION CHAMPIONS IMPROVE STORYTELLING

Roger Schneider talks about the new Inclusion Champions program at the AP. Through the effort, various reporters are consulted on bringing more inclusivity and representation to stories. Schneider is the news editor at The Associated Press Midwest Bureau overseeing Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: GROWING SUBSCRIBERS WITH INTENTIONALITY

The Chicago Tribune analyzed subscriber data between 2018 and 2020 to understand where underserved communities are so it could focus on ones with potential for growth. Rochell Bishop Sleets, news editor at the Tribune, shares the positive impact of planning intentional coverage of these communities.
