During our recent LinkedIn Live event, “What they don’t teach in J-School,” we heard from the team that’s leading the upcoming Poynter training Reporter’s Toolkit: lead faculty Tom Huang, assistant managing editor for journalism initiatives at The Dallas Morning News; Fernanda Camarena, Poynter faculty; and Kathleen McGrory, editor, local investigations fellowship at The New York Times.
The team talked about the challenges facing local newsrooms and especially early-career journalists, the craft of journalism, navigating modern newsrooms, and how to maintain ethics and integrity.
McGrory said, “When I think about navigating the newsroom — in particular for early-career reporters — one of the things I think is really important is kind of knowing which hills to die on vs. knowing (when you can leave an issue) alone and go with the flow. I think you want to learn how to strike a balance between standing up for what you believe in and speaking your truth.”
Huang said, “Younger journalists need to be assertive, and put that at the top of the list of what they’re going to do.”
