June 20, 2024

ST, PETERSBURG, Florida (June 20, 2024) The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute has announced $975,000 in grants to 39 fact-checking organizations across 34 countries, including Ukraine, Egypt, Guatemala, Liberia, Nepal and Canada as part of the latest phase of the Global Fact Check Fund.

This is the second BUILD phase of the grant program, which is designed to help develop organizations’ operational capacity to support fact-checking in local and regional work.

One recipient, the Stage Media, an IFCN signatory in Liberia, plans to use the funds to upgrade its tools and integrate AI to support fact-checking in the Pidgin language.

Meanwhile, like several grant recipients, Fast Check of Chile will use its $25,000 award to strengthen its team and develop a path to financial sustainability, a leading concern for 84% of IFCN signatories.

In this critical election year, the need for accurate information couldn’t be more urgent,” said Angie Drobnic Holan, IFCN director. “This vital funding will energize fact-checking organizations, sharpening their skills, amplifying their capabilities and expanding their reach. As we navigate the complexities of global voting, fact-checking fosters a culture of critical thinking that leads to a more informed electorate.”

Among the grant winners were 20 signatories of IFCN’s Code of Principles and 19 non-signatories, who received endorsements from active signatories to become eligible for the Fund. A selection committee of media experts rated the proposals and recommended the winners, who will have nine to 12 months to complete their projects.

The IFCN has so far awarded $4,850,000 of the $12 million fund from Google and YouTube to several dozen fact-checking groups worldwide since the first award in June 2023. The Fund has five more phases.
